Taiwan Rejects Xi Jinping’s Claims on 75th Anniversary of People’s Republic of China

On October 1, Taiwan’s Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) dismissed Chinese President Xi Jinping’s remarks made during the 75th anniversary celebrations of the People’s Republic of China. Xi stated that Taiwan is ‘China’s sacred territory’ and emphasized the ‘one-China principle’ and the ‘1992 Consensus.’

Xi Jinping insisted on the ‘complete reunification of the motherland’ and opposed ‘Taiwan independence separatist activities.’ He declared that this reunification is an ‘irreversible trend’ and ‘the will of the people.’

In response, MAC called on China to recognize that Taiwan and China are not affiliated and to engage in pragmatic dialogue with Taiwan’s democratically elected government. MAC Minister Chiu Chui-Cheng stated, ‘The Republic of China is a sovereign country. Taiwan has never been part of the People’s Republic of China.’

Chiu added that the ‘one China’ principle and the ‘1992 Consensus’ are opposed by mainstream public opinion in Taiwan. He urged Beijing to build goodwill to foster favorable conditions for cross-strait relations.
