Taiwan Criticizes China's Interference in Diplomatic Relations
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed disappointment over China's interference in the diplomatic affairs of democratic countries. The ministry described China's actions as "provocative" and urged Beijing to act rationally. This statement followed China's disapproval of a phone call between Taiwan President Lai Ching-te and US Representative Nancy Pelosi, as well as the US's decision to sell arms to Taiwan worth USD 387 million.
During the phone call, Pelosi assured President Lai of the US Congress's bipartisan support for Taiwan and advocated for Taiwan's participation in international organizations. Taiwan emphasized its status as an independent sovereign state, asserting its right to establish international relationships without external interference.
Taiwan expressed gratitude to the US for its commitment to Taiwan's security, as outlined in the Taiwan Relations Act and the "six assurances." The 1979 act ensures continued unofficial relations between Taiwan and the US, while the "six assurances" include a promise not to set an end date for arms sales to Taiwan.
