In the Philippines, two individuals suspected of being Chinese spies were arrested after allegedly posing as Taiwanese tourists and taking photographs of Philippine Coast Guard ships. The arrests took place in Palawan, a region near the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea. The suspects reportedly used their phones and drones without authorization to monitor coast guard activities, even installing cameras on coconut trees at a resort.
Local witnesses reported suspicious behavior, and one suspect was captured on camera by residents. Despite denying the allegations, authorities found photographs of military bases and ships on their phones. The Philippine National Bureau of Investigation is now searching for any accomplices.
In a related incident, a Chinese national named Deng and two Filipino accomplices were arrested in Metro Manila for similar espionage activities. Deng was allegedly using surveillance equipment to gather intelligence on sensitive sites. Despite denials from Deng's wife and the Chinese embassy, the Philippine government claims to have a strong case against him. Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya of the National Security Council stated that more arrests are expected as the government intensifies its efforts against espionage.
