Indian Coast Guard Celebrates 49th Raising Day
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) is celebrating its 49th Raising Day on February 1, 2025. Since its inception in 1977, the ICG has grown from seven surface platforms to a robust force with 151 ships and 76 aircraft. By 2030, it aims to expand to 200 surface platforms and 100 aircraft.
Mission and Achievements
Operating under the motto "Vayam Rakshamah" (We Protect), the ICG has saved over 11,730 lives, including 169 in the past year. It covers a vast 4.6 million square-kilometre Search and Rescue Region, ensuring the safety of seafarers and vessels.
Daily Operations and Contributions
The ICG maintains constant vigilance with 55 to 60 surface platforms and 10 to 12 aircraft daily, supporting secure sea lanes and promoting India's blue economy. It also plays a key role in curbing illegal activities, seizing contraband worth INR 52,560.96 crores last year.
Disaster Response and Environmental Protection
The ICG is active in disaster response, having conducted rescue operations during Cyclone ASNA and flood relief efforts. It is also the authority for oil spill response and participates in environmental initiatives like the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.
Modernization and Technological Advancements
Aligning with the "Make in India" initiative, the ICG is modernizing with new patrol vessels and communication systems. It has launched the ASHA app for healthcare management and is setting up a Tier-III Data Centre.
Infrastructure Development
New facilities like the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Chennai and the Coast Guard Air Enclave in Puducherry are enhancing operational readiness. The ICG's achievements have been recognized by India's top leaders.
