Supreme Court Asks Tripura Government About Terminated Teachers
The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to the Tripura government regarding a plea filed by 79 under-graduate teachers who were terminated in 2017 and 2020. The teachers argue that their termination was unlawful and unconstitutional.
Background
In 2014, the High Court of Tripura declared a 2003 Employment Policy invalid, which led to the termination of over 10,000 teachers, including the petitioners. The teachers claim they were not informed about the High Court proceedings and that the judgment was delivered without their knowledge.
Allegations
The teachers allege that a scam is being perpetrated by the Tripura government, with their employment and salary codes still active, leading to misappropriation of funds by corrupt officials. The Principal Accountant General of Tripura is investigating the alleged fraud.
Current Situation
A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and PB Varale has asked the Tripura government to respond to the plea. The teachers have also highlighted the poor condition of the school education system in the state due to a shortage of teachers.
Earlier, 700 other teachers had moved to the Supreme Court with the same issue.
