Shashi Tharoor Criticizes President Murmu’s Speech in Parliament

New Delhi, June 27: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor expressed his disapproval of President Droupadi Murmu’s address to the joint session of Parliament. Tharoor argued that the speech should have addressed current issues affecting the country, such as the NEET exams and unemployment, rather than the 1975 Emergency.

Tharoor stated, “There was no logic in talking about Emergency in the address after 49 years. She should have spoken about today’s issues.” He also noted the absence of mentions of the India-China border and the state of Manipur.

Earlier, President Murmu had criticized the imposition of the Emergency in 1975, calling it the darkest chapter of a direct attack on the Constitution. She emphasized the government’s commitment to fair investigations of recent exam paper leaks and stringent punishment for those responsible.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also criticized the President’s address, claiming it was scripted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to gain cheap applause and reject the public mandate. Kharge stated, “Modi Ji is trying to gain cheap applause by making the Honorable President speak lies, which the people of India have already rejected in the 2024 elections.”
