Dubai [UAE], October 2: As the Women’s T20 World Cup 2024 approaches, star Indian batter Shafali Verma emphasized that the main goal for the Women in Blue is to win the prestigious trophy, rather than focusing on individual achievements. The Indian women’s team arrived in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last month, with the tournament starting on October 3.

Shafali Verma has an impressive record in international cricket. In five Tests, she has scored 567 runs at an average of 63.00, including a century and three fifties, with her highest score being 205. In 26 One Day Internationals (ODIs), she has accumulated 588 runs at an average of 23.52, with four half-centuries and a top score of 71*. In 81 T20 Internationals (T20Is) since her debut in 2019, Shafali has scored 1,948 runs at an average of 25.63 and a strike rate of over 130, with 10 half-centuries and a best score of 81.

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Shafali stated, “Our main focus right now is that we win the [World Cup] trophy. Individual goals and records are a part of the game. But there’s no better feeling than your team winning, and those nights I get good sleep.” She also mentioned that she has made mental adjustments to her game, allowing her to play more consistently.

In the previous T20 World Cup in 2022, India reached the semi-finals but were defeated by Australia. Leading up to this year’s tournament, India had mixed results, losing series to Australia and England but winning against Bangladesh. They also drew a series with South Africa and lost the Asia Cup final to Sri Lanka.

India will start their T20 World Cup campaign against New Zealand on October 4 at the Dubai International Stadium. The squad includes Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Shafali Verma, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Richa Ghosh (WK), Yastika Bhatia (WK), Pooja Vastrakar, Arundhati Reddy, Renuka Singh, Dayalan Hemalatha, Asha Sobhana, Radha Yadav, Shreyanka Patil, and Sajana Sajeevan. Travelling reserves are Uma Chetry (WK), Tanuja Kanwer, and Saima Thakor, with Raghvi Bist and Priya Mishra as non-travelling reserves.
