Salima Tete and Other Indian Sports Stars Honored with National Awards
Indian women's hockey captain Salima Tete is set to receive the prestigious Arjuna Award, celebrating her outstanding achievements in hockey. This recognition has brought great pride to her home state of Jharkhand. Bijay Shankar, General Secretary of Hockey Jharkhand, expressed his joy, stating, "We all are very happy, and I extend best wishes to everyone on behalf of Hockey Jharkhand."
Salima's success is a testament to the growing recognition of women athletes in India, inspiring many young players. Alongside her, other notable athletes have been honored. Double Olympic medalist Manu Bhaker, World Chess Champion Gukesh Dommaraju, Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh, and Para Athlete Praveen Kumar have been awarded the prestigious Khel Ratna.
Manu Bhaker made history by becoming the first Indian woman shooter to win an Olympic medal. Gukesh Dommaraju became the youngest world chess champion at 18, defeating China's Ding Liren. Praveen Kumar won gold in the Men's High Jump T64 at the Paralympics, and Harmanpreet Singh led the Indian hockey team to a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics.
Other athletes receiving the Arjuna Award include Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Vantika Agrawal, and Jyothi Yarraji. Para athletes and Olympic medalists are also among the awardees. Former football coach Armando Agnelo Colaco will receive the Dronacharya Award. The awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025.
