Rajnath Singh's Visit to Laos for ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting
India's Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh, is set to visit Laos from November 20 to 22. He will participate in the 11th ASEAN Defence Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) in Vientiane. This meeting will focus on discussing various regional and international security issues.
During his visit, Singh will engage in bilateral meetings with defence counterparts from countries such as Australia, China, Japan, Laos, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, the Republic of Korea, and the US. These meetings aim to strengthen bilateral defence cooperation.
This visit is significant as it follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent interactions with leaders from ADMM-Plus countries during the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The ADMM-Plus serves as a platform for ASEAN member states and its eight Dialogue Partners, including India, to enhance security and defence cooperation.
India has been a dialogue partner of ASEAN since 1992, and the first ADMM-Plus was held in Hanoi, Vietnam, on October 12, 2010. Since 2017, the ADMM-Plus Ministers have met annually to strengthen cooperation. Lao PDR is hosting the 11th ADMM-Plus.
