Protests Erupt in Balochistan Over Enforced Disappearances and Killings
In Balochistan, Pakistan, protests have erupted across several cities demanding an end to enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, and the kidnapping of Baloch women. Baloch students in Islamabad and Uthal held peaceful protests, while the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) organized rallies throughout the region. Businesses in Mastung, Kalat, and other cities closed in solidarity during shutter-down strikes.
Protesters urged human rights groups and the UN to hold Pakistani officials accountable. Families of missing persons gathered in Quetta for a protest march organized by the BYC, carrying pictures of their loved ones and chanting slogans against enforced disappearances. A three-day protest camp was set up at Shaheed Fida Chowk in Turbat in response to recent targeted killings, including those of Zakriya Baloch, Naveed Baloch, and Allah Dad Baloch. Protesters called for justice, claiming these killings were part of a planned campaign.
In Noshki, demonstrators marched from the Mir Gul Khan Naseer Library to the Noshki Press Club, denouncing the killing of Allah Dad Baloch and the kidnapping of Asma Jattak Baloch. Activists accused Pakistani security forces of targeting Baloch students and intellectuals as part of a crackdown on political opposition.
In Kharan, BYC activists joined a sit-in demanding the release of Hafiz Hazrat Ali Baloch and Mubarak Baloch. Shops and businesses in Mastung and Kalat remained closed in protest, resulting in a shutter-down strike. Demonstrators called for the release of all missing persons during protests in Chagai, Dalbandin, Nokundi, and Yakmach.
Protests will continue across Balochistan until all missing individuals are found, according to organizers. Students at Lasbela University of Agriculture, Water, and Marine Sciences in Uthal also protested against targeted killings and enforced disappearances.
