Protests Erupt Over Tragic Incident at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College

In Siliguri, West Bengal, students and junior doctors from North Bengal Medical College and Hospital organized a torchlight procession. This was in response to the tragic rape and murder of a woman doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Doctors from private hospitals in Kolkata also protested by lighting earthen lamps at Ganga Ghat. The Supreme Court of India has demanded a report from the National Task Force on safety issues related to this case. Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, led the hearing.

The court had previously set up a National Task Force to address safety concerns and create an action plan to prevent gender-based violence. The court questioned the West Bengal government about the slow progress in installing CCTV cameras, building toilets, and setting up biometric systems. Senior Advocate Dwivedi cited logistical delays due to floods but promised completion by October 15.

Advocate Vrinda Grover, representing the victim’s family, raised concerns about social media posts revealing the victim’s identity. The Supreme Court ordered social media platforms to remove such posts.
