The Prime Minister's Internship Scheme (PMIS), introduced in the 2024-25 Budget, aims to create one crore internship opportunities over the next five years. The Ministry of Corporate Affairs has announced that these internships will be available in India's top 500 companies, selected based on their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) spending over the past three years.
To kickstart the initiative, a Pilot Project has been launched, offering 1.25 lakh internships for the financial year 2024-25. The entire process, from application to selection, is managed through an online portal, pminternship.mca.gov.in. Currently, 1.27 lakh internship opportunities have been posted, attracting over 6.21 lakh applications from young aspirants. The selection process is ongoing, ensuring a fair and merit-based allocation.
While the initial focus is on the top 500 companies, the scheme also allows other companies, banks, and financial institutions to participate, pending approval from the Ministry of Corporate Affairs. This inclusive approach aims to involve underrepresented sectors and regions.
The PMIS seeks to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry needs, providing interns with practical training, hands-on experience, and industry-specific skills to boost their employability. Harsh Malhotra, Minister of State for Corporate Affairs and Road Transport and Highways, emphasized the scheme's transformative potential in a written reply in Rajya Sabha.
This is a program started by the Prime Minister of India to help students get work experience by doing internships in big companies.
In India, 'crore' is a term used to represent ten million. So, 1 crore means 10 million.
CSR stands for Corporate Social Responsibility. It means companies spend money on activities that help society, like education or health.
A pilot project is a small-scale test run of a program to see how well it works before making it bigger.
