On February 13, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and President Emmanuel Macron of France visited the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Cadarache, France. This visit marked the first time any Head of State or Government has visited ITER, a leading fusion energy project.
The leaders were welcomed by the Director General of ITER and expressed their admiration for the progress made, particularly the assembly of the world's largest Tokamak, which aims to produce 500 MW of fusion power. They praised the dedication of the engineers and scientists involved in the project.
India is one of the seven members contributing to ITER, with around 200 Indian scientists and companies like L&T, Inox India, TCS, TCE, and HCL Technologies participating in the project.
Prime Minister Modi shared on social media, "Went to the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Cadarache with President Emmanuel Macron. Complimented the team working on this project, which represents a commendable step toward sustainable and limitless clean energy for the future."
Both leaders emphasized the importance of nuclear energy in enhancing energy security and moving towards a low-carbon economy. They acknowledged the strong India-France civil nuclear ties and cooperation, particularly regarding the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Plant Project. They also welcomed the first meeting of the Special Task Force on Civil Nuclear Energy and the signing of agreements on Small Modular Reactor (SMR) and Advanced Modular Reactor (AMR) technologies.
Prime Minister Modi is the leader of India. He is responsible for running the country and making important decisions.
President Macron is the leader of France. He is in charge of the French government and represents France in international matters.
ITER stands for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor. It is a big science project in France that is trying to create energy like the sun does, using fusion.
Fusion energy is a type of energy that is made by joining small atoms together, like how the sun makes energy. It is very powerful and clean, meaning it doesn't pollute the air.
A Tokamak is a special machine used in fusion experiments. It helps scientists try to make fusion energy by holding very hot gas in a donut shape.
Energy security means having a steady and safe supply of energy for a country. It is important so that people always have electricity and fuel when they need it.
Low-carbon transition is the process of changing from using energy sources that pollute a lot, like coal, to cleaner ones, like solar or nuclear, to help protect the environment.
India-France nuclear cooperation means that India and France are working together on nuclear energy projects. This helps both countries share knowledge and resources to make better energy solutions.
