In Islamabad, Pakistan, the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has reported a new polio case, increasing the total number of cases this year to 50. The latest case involves a 20-month-old girl from Tank district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, confirmed to have Wild Poliovirus Type 1 (WPV1). This is the second case in Tank this year, linked to a previous case in July. Balochistan is the most affected province with 24 cases, followed by Sindh with 13, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with 11, and Punjab and Islamabad each with one case.
Authorities emphasize the importance of vaccination campaigns to control the virus, especially in high-risk areas. The rise in cases has raised global concerns, prompting international organizations to urge Pakistan to take emergency measures. The 49th case was reported on November 15 in Jaffarabad, Balochistan, marking the district's first confirmed infection. Genetic sequencing traced the virus to a strain identified in Pishin, Balochistan, in April, indicating active transmission in the province.
Pakistan is one of only two countries where wild poliovirus transmission has not been eradicated. Challenges such as insecurity, misinformation, and community resistance hinder vaccination efforts. Polio attacks the nervous system, causing paralysis or death, and while there is no cure, immunization is the best defense.
