Philippines Vice President Sara Duterte Faces Impeachment
In a historic move, the House of Representatives in the Philippines has impeached Vice President Sara Duterte. This decision came after more than one-third of the members supported the impeachment, with 215 lawmakers endorsing the complaint. This makes her the first sitting Vice President in the Philippines to face such proceedings.
Reasons for Impeachment
Duterte is accused of several serious charges, including violating the Constitution, graft and corruption, betrayal of public trust, bribery, and conspiracy to commit murder. The complaint, along with a list of supporters, has been sent to the Senate for trial.
Senate Trial
The Senate will conduct the trial, with 11 members of the House acting as prosecutors. A conviction requires a two-thirds vote, or the support of 16 out of 24 senators. If Duterte is acquitted, no new impeachment proceedings can be initiated against her for one year.
Background
The House had previously delayed the transmission of three impeachment complaints. However, a fourth complaint was registered, consolidating the grounds of the earlier ones. Sandro Marcos, the President's son and senior Deputy Majority Leader, was the lead complainant.
