Pak PM, son seek acquittal in Ramzan Sugar Mills case
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Son Seek Acquittal in Ramzan Sugar Mills Case
In Lahore, Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz have filed a plea for acquittal in the Ramzan Sugar Mills case. Their lawyer, Amjad Pervaiz, argued for their acquittal due to a lack of evidence of corruption. The case, initially handled by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), was moved to an anti-corruption court following amendments to NAB laws.
The NAB had accused Shehbaz Sharif, during his tenure as Chief Minister, of misusing authority, causing a loss of 213 million Pakistani Rupees to the national treasury. This was allegedly done by ordering the construction of a drain in Chiniot district for the benefit of Ramzan Sugar Mills, owned by his sons Hamza and Suleman.
Previously, the Lahore Accountability Court transferred the case to the Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) after a request from the NAB prosecutor. The Supreme Court of Pakistan had earlier nullified amendments to NAB laws, impacting several cases, including this one.
In November 2020, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) charged Shehbaz, Hamza, and Salman Shehbaz with financial fraud and other offenses under the Prevention of Corruption Act and Anti Money Laundering Act.
