Pakistan People’s Party Opposes Ban on Imran Khan’s PTI
The senior leadership of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has strongly opposed the federal government’s decision to ban Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). PPP leader Raza Rabbani emphasized that prohibiting a political party is incompatible with democratic ideals and urged the government to refrain from such measures. He warned that the ban would worsen the current political and economic uncertainty in the nation.
Senior PPP politician Farhatullah Babar echoed this opinion, stating that self-made crises cannot survive in Pakistani democracy. PPP leader Nasir Shah also expressed his personal opposition to the ban, noting that the party chairman had opposed it as well.
Despite the opposition, the government, represented by federal minister of communication Ata Tarar, announced the decision to outlaw PTI. Tarar cited PTI’s involvement in foreign funding, the May 9 riots, the resettlement of terrorists, the cypher episode, and a resolution passed in the US as credible evidence for the ban.
