In Islamabad, Pakistan's federal government has extended an offer for dialogue to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq emphasized that the option for talks has always been available. Speaking at the Punjab Assembly, Sadiq mentioned that the government remains open to discussions with PTI, maintaining a committee for this purpose.
Sadiq stated, "The ball is in the PTI court now," indicating that PTI must first seek internal approval before engaging with the government. Despite political differences, communication with PTI has not been severed. Sadiq acknowledged the challenges in dealing with PTI, describing its founder as a "tough man."
Last week, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed willingness to resume talks with PTI, which had withdrawn from the dialogue process. PTI's demands included a judicial commission to investigate incidents on May 9, 2023, and November 26, 2024, as well as the 2024 elections. Sharif proposed forming a parliamentary committee to address these issues, recalling that PTI had previously formed a committee, not a judicial commission, when in power.
Political adviser Rana Sanaullah also showed readiness to engage PTI in talks. However, PTI rejected Sharif's offer, with Leader of Opposition Omar Ayub stating, "We reject Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif's offer [to resume dialogue]." PTI demands the release of its "political prisoners." Senator Irfan Siddiqui, spokesperson for the government negotiation committee, criticized PTI for ending the dialogue, stating they missed a chance to fulfill their demands.
