The World Uyghur Congress (WUC) has expressed serious concerns over reports linking French company Decathlon to the exploitation of Uyghur forced labour in China. According to a report by "Disclose" and "Cash Investigation," Decathlon is connected to Qingdao Jifa Group, a major textile supplier in China, involved in forced labour practices targeting Uyghurs.
The WUC highlighted the role of Jifa Group in China's "Strike Hard Campaign," which enforces forced "re-education" through employment. Uyghurs who resist these labour demands face imprisonment or internment. A case involving 16-year-old Uyghur Patima Bahit, forced to work at Jifa, was mentioned.
WUC President Turgunjan Alawdun criticized companies like Decathlon for benefiting from systems that exploit Uyghur women and violate human rights. He urged businesses to recognize the risks of sourcing from China, where due diligence is challenging.
The WUC called for Decathlon to stop operations linked to Uyghur forced labour, investigate its supply chain, and disclose findings. They also urged stronger enforcement of global laws like the Uyghur Forced Labour Prevention Act to hold companies accountable.
The WUC remains dedicated to advocating for Uyghur rights and condemns any complicity in their repression.
