Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, inaugurated India's first bio-bitumen-based National Highway stretch on NH-44 in Mansar, Nagpur, Maharashtra. This innovative project uses lignin-based bio-bitumen technology.
The highway was developed by Praj Industries in collaboration with CSIR - Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and Oriental. The use of lignin as a sustainable binder is a breakthrough in flexible pavement technology, addressing bitumen scarcity and reducing import dependency.
This innovation supports global sustainability goals by generating revenue for bio-refineries, reducing stubble burning, and cutting greenhouse gas emissions by at least 70% compared to fossil-based bitumen. It leverages India's abundant lignocellulosic biomass, aligning with the nation's vision for sustainable growth.
Nitin Gadkari emphasized the importance of green technologies and industrial sustainability, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat. He highlighted the potential for large-scale domestic production and a self-reliant future for India.
Gadkari mentioned 400 projects in India aimed at producing CNG from biomass, with 40 already completed. These projects use parali, reducing pollution and benefiting farmers. He noted that CNG is cheaper and less polluting than petrol, providing economic benefits.
Gadkari's initiative not only addresses environmental concerns but also supports farmers by creating value from waste, turning them into 'bitumendata.'
Nitin Gadkari is an Indian politician who is the Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways. He is responsible for building and maintaining roads and highways in India.
Bio-bitumen is a type of material used to make roads. It is made from natural sources like plants, which makes it more environmentally friendly than regular bitumen that comes from oil.
NH-44 is a National Highway in India. It is one of the longest highways and connects many important cities across the country.
Lignin-based technology uses lignin, a natural substance found in plants, to create materials like bio-bitumen. This helps in making products that are better for the environment.
Praj Industries is an Indian company that works on creating sustainable and eco-friendly technologies. They help in developing projects like the bio-bitumen highway.
Aatmanirbhar Bharat is a vision by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It means 'self-reliant India' and aims to make India more independent in producing goods and services.
CNG stands for Compressed Natural Gas, which is a cleaner fuel for vehicles. Biomass refers to organic materials like plant waste, which can be used to produce CNG, helping reduce pollution.
