The New Gwadar International Airport (NGIA) in Pakistan has faced its third delay in opening due to ongoing security concerns. Initially set to open on January 1, 2025, the airport's launch has been postponed indefinitely. This airport is a significant part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and is funded by China at a cost of USD 250 million. It is designed to handle large aircraft like the Airbus A380.

Reasons for Delay

The original opening date was August 14, 2024, to align with Pakistan's Independence Day, but it was delayed due to protests by the Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC). A second delay occurred after attacks by the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) on CPEC infrastructure. The BLA, a group seeking Baloch independence, has targeted Chinese projects and nationals, including a 2018 bus bombing and a 2023 attack in Gwadar.

Security Concerns

The BLA has warned foreign nationals to avoid Balochistan, labeling it a "war zone." In response, the Civil Aviation Authority and the Balochistan government are reviewing security measures before the airport can open. The BLA's Majeed Brigade has pledged to continue opposing Chinese interests, complicating efforts to stabilize the region and attract foreign investment.
