Nepal Confirms Safety of Peacekeepers After Attack on UNIFIL in Lebanon

In Kathmandu, Nepal, the Nepal Army has confirmed the safety of its peacekeepers in Lebanon following an attack on the United Nations Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL). The attack injured several members of the international force. Nepal Army spokesperson Gaurav Kumar KC assured that regular contact with the troops has been maintained, ensuring their well-being. Despite sporadic incidents disrupting daily operations, the safety of the personnel remains unaffected.

Currently, 877 Nepali soldiers are stationed in Lebanon as part of the UN peacekeeping mission. Nepal, a significant contributor to UN peacekeeping forces, strongly condemned the attacks and urged conflicting parties to ensure the safety of UN personnel. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nepal, emphasized the need for immediate cessation of such actions and called for thorough investigations.

The UNIFIL reported that two Israel Defense Forces (IDF) tanks destroyed a post’s main gate near the Israeli border, leading to an incident where smoke caused skin irritations and gastrointestinal reactions among 15 peacekeepers. The IDF claimed the encroachment was to evacuate wounded soldiers.

A joint statement from 34 UNIFIL-contributing countries, including Armenia, Azerbaijan, and France, highlighted the importance of respecting UNIFIL’s presence and ensuring the safety of its personnel. The statement reaffirmed support for UNIFIL’s mission to stabilize and bring peace to South Lebanon and the Middle East.

UNIFIL, established by the UN Security Council in 1978, aims to restore peace and assist the Lebanese government. It currently has over 10,000 personnel deployed.
