The National High-Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has made significant progress in the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project by casting the first Full Span Pre-Stressed Concrete (PSC) Box Girder in Maharashtra. This 40-meter span, weighing 970 metric tons, is the heaviest in India's construction history. It requires 390 cubic meters of concrete and 42 metric tons of steel, marking a major advancement in rail infrastructure.
The girder is cast as a single piece, enhancing the speed of construction. The substructure work, including piles and piers, is ongoing, while 13 casting yards have been developed along the Maharashtra alignment. Three yards are operational, facilitating the casting of full-span and segmental box girders. Full-span girders, used in most locations, allow construction to progress up to ten times faster than segmental girders.
Advanced machinery like Straddle Carriers and Bridge Launching Gantries will launch the girders. The casting yards are equipped with jigs, casting beds, batching plants, and quality control labs to ensure high standards and expedite the process.
The Maharashtra section spans 135 kilometers, featuring major river bridges, special bridges, and stations in Thane, Virar, and Boisar. Seven mountain tunnels are also part of the route. The approach has been successful in Gujarat, where 255 kilometers of viaduct have been completed since April 2021.
A bullet train is a very fast train that can travel at high speeds, much faster than regular trains. It is designed to connect cities quickly, like Mumbai and Ahmedabad.
PSC stands for Pre-Stressed Concrete, which is a type of strong concrete used in construction. A box girder is a beam that supports bridges and is shaped like a box. It helps make the train tracks strong and stable.
This is a company in India responsible for building and managing high-speed train projects, like the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train.
A metric ton is a unit of weight equal to 1,000 kilograms. It is used to measure very heavy things, like the parts of a bridge.
