New Delhi, India – August 6: Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar) MP Fauzia Khan has expressed serious concerns about the political crisis in Bangladesh. She urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold an all-party meeting to discuss the issue, emphasizing its importance for national security.

Call for Parliamentary Discussion

Fauzia Khan stated, “It is a serious subject. It looks like anti-secular forces have captured Bangladesh. This is a serious issue for our nation too. If there are attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, then we must pay attention to them. There should be a discussion on this in Parliament as it is an issue concerning national security. The PM should hold a meeting with leaders of all political parties and there should be an all-party consensus. The government should state in Parliament on this issue.”

Strategic Interests

RJD MP Manoj Jha also highlighted the importance of monitoring the political developments in Bangladesh. He said, “The situation in Bangladesh is very serious…We have to keep our strategic interests in mind and should have a keen eye on the political developments in our immediate neighbourhood as these kinds of situations could have some possible outcomes that could be undesirable for us.”

Government Response

Earlier today, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla informed the lower house of Parliament that External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will make a statement on the situation in Bangladesh. Jaishankar is scheduled to address the Lok Sabha at 3:30 pm and the Rajya Sabha at 2:30 pm. He also chaired an all-party meeting to brief leaders about the ongoing developments in Bangladesh.

Political Situation in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is currently facing a fluid political situation with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigning amid mounting protests. The protests, led by students demanding an end to a quota system for government jobs, have evolved into anti-government demonstrations. In response, leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka have proposed an interim government led by Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus.

Sheikh Hasina arrived in India on Monday evening after tendering her resignation. It remains unclear whether she will stay in Delhi or move to another location.
