Indian athletes, their families celebrate prestigious Arjuna Award recognition
Manu Bhaker, D Gukesh, and Others Honored with Khel Ratna and Arjuna Awards
In a proud moment for India, several athletes have been recognized for their outstanding achievements in sports. Double Olympic medallist Manu Bhaker and chess grandmaster D Gukesh have been awarded the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. Manu's grandmother, Savitri Devi, expressed her joy, saying, "She plays very well and has made the entire nation proud." Gukesh shared his gratitude in a video, thanking the government and expressing his motivation to achieve more for the country.
Other notable awardees include Indian men's hockey team captain Harmanpreet Singh and Para Athlete Praveen Kumar, who also received the Khel Ratna. The Arjuna Awards were given to Indian men's hockey players Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, and women's hockey team captain Salima Tete. Chess grandmaster Vantika Agrawal and athlete Jyothi Yarraji were also honored with Arjuna Awards.
Para athletes Preeti Pal, Jeevanji Deepthi, Ajeet Singh, Sachin Sarjerao Khilari, Dharambir, Pranav Soorma, Hokato Sema, Simran, and Navdeep will receive Arjuna Awards as well. Olympic medalists Swapnil Suresh Kusale and Sarabjot Singh, along with Para-Olympic shooters Mona Agarwal and Rubina Francis, have been recognized with Arjuna Awards.
Former Dempo FC and East Bengal head coach Armando Agnelo Colaco was awarded the Dronacharya Award in the lifetime category. The awards will be presented by President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 17, 2025.
