Manipur CM N Biren Singh Urges Cleanliness and Non-Violence on Mahatma Gandhi’s 155th Birth Anniversary

On October 2, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh encouraged the people of Manipur to join a cleanliness drive and commit to non-violence and political dialogue to solve the state’s challenges. This call to action was made on the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh said, “As a Chief Minister, I give a message to the public of Manipur, that on this day we should try to join the cleanliness drive even by picking up a small lump of soil. Let us have faith in non-violence. Every prevailing issue and problem should be solved politically by talking. We should commit ourselves to the nation and state.”

Earlier in the day, the Chief Minister paid tribute to Mahatma Gandhi in Imphal by laying a flower wreath at the Gandhi Memorial Hall.

Union Ministers Jitan Ram Manjhi, JP Nadda, and Shobha Karandlaje also paid floral tributes to Mahatma Gandhi at Khadi Bhandar. Manjhi highlighted Gandhi’s promotion of Khadi for self-reliance and employment, while Karandlaje emphasized Gandhi’s focus on cleanliness and Khadi during the Indian movement. BJP President and Union Minister JP Nadda noted that Gandhi promoted Khadi to unite people during the freedom struggle.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also paid his respects, stating, “On behalf of all countrymen, salutations to Pujya Bapu on his birth anniversary. His life and ideals based on truth, harmony and equality will always remain an inspiration for the countrymen.”

Mahatma Gandhi, born on October 2, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, led the non-violent resistance against British colonial rule, which eventually led to India’s independence in 1947.
