The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in Pakistan has announced unavoidable action against terrorists in the Kurram District due to escalating violence. This decision follows months of unrest, beginning with a deadly attack in November 2024 that killed over 40 people. Since then, land disputes have led to at least 130 more deaths, causing road closures and shortages of essential supplies.
Despite a ceasefire agreement on January 1, violence persists, prompting the KP government to plan a limited counter-terrorism operation in Lower Kurram. This operation is expected to displace over 1,000 families, who will be relocated to temporary camps in Thall. KP Chief Secretary Nadeem Aslam Chaudhry and police chief Akhtar Hayat Khan, among others, agreed on the necessity of swift action to restore peace.
Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif, KP government spokesperson, stated that action against miscreants is unavoidable, with security forces supporting local law enforcement. The government aims to separate peaceful residents from terrorists and has faced criticism for the ongoing violence. Jirga members from Upper Kurram have urged political and military leaders to act against militants undermining the truce.
The KP government has deployed over 1,400 personnel, including police and army troops, to support law enforcement in Lower Kurram. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has sent aid to support displaced families, as part of efforts to address the humanitarian crisis and ensure safe relocation.
