Kazakhstan President Tokayev at Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week
On January 15, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attended the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Summit. He addressed global issues such as biodiversity loss, climate change, and food insecurity. Tokayev emphasized that these challenges are worsened by geopolitical tensions and disrupted supply chains, leading to a bleak economic outlook.
Focus on Sustainable Development
To tackle these issues, Kazakhstan plans to invest in digitalization, AI, infrastructure, and nuclear energy. Tokayev noted that energy systems contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss. He urged international partners, including energy firms like Eni, Masdar, and Total, to invest in green energy projects in Kazakhstan, which have pledged 43 gigawatts of green energy.

Kazakhstan is building its first nuclear power project following a national referendum. Tokayev highlighted the importance of securing raw materials for global net-zero targets. The country is also developing transport routes to enhance Eurasian connectivity and play a role in the Belt and Road Initiative.
Climate Adaptation and Sustainable Agriculture
Central Asia faces rapid warming, threatening ecosystems and food security. Tokayev stressed the need for climate adaptation strategies, including improved water management and the use of AI and satellite monitoring. He reiterated Kazakhstan's commitment to sustainable agriculture and a new development paradigm based on resilience, equity, and sustainability.
International Cooperation and Green Financing
Tokayev called for increased green financing, international cooperation in technology transfer, and a synergy between climate priorities and economic development. He emphasized the need for a flexible approach to support different sustainability goals, urging global unity and cooperation.
