Kavinder Gupta Praises High Voter Turnout in Jammu and Kashmir Elections
Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], October 1: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Kavinder Gupta, expressed his happiness over the high voter turnout during the third phase of the J&K assembly polls. Speaking on Tuesday, Gupta noted the enthusiasm among the people as elections were held after a decade.
Gupta highlighted the significant increase in voter participation compared to previous elections, where candidates often won with only 4 to 5 percent of the vote share. He stated, “Elections are taking place in Jammu and Kashmir after 10 years and there is enthusiasm among the people. During this time, a lot of things have changed. In the previous phases, there was an increase in voter turnout; earlier candidates used to become MPs or MLAs with only 4 per cent, 5 per cent of the vote share. Today, people have shown their gratitude towards democracy and have expressed their faith in it, so I am sure that the government that will be formed will be in favour of democracy and in favour of the Bharatiya Janata Party.”
The third phase of voting saw a cumulative voter turnout of 11.60 percent as of 9 am on Tuesday, according to the Election Commission of India. Udhampur district recorded the highest turnout at 14.23 percent, followed by Samba at 13.31 percent.
Polling for the third and final phase began at 7 am on Tuesday across 40 constituencies in seven districts of the Union Territory. Voting is taking place in 24 constituencies in the Jammu division and 16 in Kashmir, with strong security measures in place to ensure peaceful elections. A total of 415 candidates are contesting in this phase.
The three-phase election involves multiple parties competing for 90 seats across the former state. The National Conference (NC) and the Congress have formed an alliance, while the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are also major contenders. The votes will be counted on October 8.
