Karnataka Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan Challenges BJP on Petrol Prices
Karnataka's Housing and Minorities Welfare Minister Zameer Ahmed Khan has challenged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for an open discussion on the hike in petrol prices. He criticized the BJP for allowing petrol prices to rise significantly and highlighted the central government's high excise duties.
Speaking to reporters, Khan pointed out that during the UPA government, excise duties were much lower, resulting in cheaper petrol and diesel prices. He questioned why the BJP leaders were silent about the current high prices.
Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri responded, blaming international factors such as the Russia-Ukraine war and other global challenges for the price hikes. He defended the BJP's actions, stating that the central government had reduced excise duties on two occasions.
The Karnataka government recently increased the sales tax on petroleum products, leading to a Rs 3 per litre rise in petrol and diesel prices. This has brought the cost of petrol in Bengaluru to Rs 102.84 per litre and diesel to Rs 88.95 per litre.
