Judge Blocks Trump's Order on Birthright Citizenship
A federal judge in Seattle has temporarily halted former President Donald Trump's executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship in the United States. Judge John Coughenour, appointed by President Reagan, called the policy "blatantly unconstitutional." The restraining order, issued in response to a legal challenge by Washington Attorney General Nick Brown and other states, pauses the policy for 14 days for further legal review.
Judge Coughenour expressed disbelief that the order was signed, questioning the legal advice behind it. The lawsuit argues that the order violates the 14th Amendment, which grants citizenship to all children born in the U.S. Lane Polozola, representing Washington, highlighted the potential harm to children who could be denied citizenship, noting the negative impacts and burdens on state programs.
The Trump administration argues that the 14th Amendment allows the exclusion of children of undocumented immigrants. Justice Department attorney Brett Shumate requested more time for policy briefing. Trump plans to challenge the ruling, and additional lawsuits have been filed by various groups. In Maryland, a hearing is set for February 5, and in New Hampshire, another hearing is scheduled for February 10.
