Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness is on an official visit to India from September 30 to October 3. This is his first visit to India and the first bilateral visit by a Jamaican Prime Minister to India.

Strengthening Ties

Holness’s visit aims to bolster bilateral relations and enhance economic cooperation between India and Jamaica. MEA Secretary (East) Jaideep Mazumdar highlighted the strong historical and cultural ties between the two countries, including shared values of democracy, freedom, and a passion for cricket.

During his visit, Holness will travel to Sarnath and Varanasi, where he will attend the Ganga Aarti. He will also visit the parliament complex.

Cricket Discussions

Cricket was a significant topic of discussion between the two leaders. Holness thanked India for its contributions to the Sabina Park stadium in Jamaica. The presence of famous Jamaican cricketer Chris Gayle at the Prime Minister’s lunch highlighted the importance of cricket in the discussions.

Holness acknowledged the contribution of the Indian diaspora to Jamaica’s development. Prime Minister Modi proposed commemorating 180 years of Indian arrival in Jamaica next year, which was warmly accepted by Holness.

Holness arrived in New Delhi on Monday and was warmly received by Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary. He held a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Modi at Hyderabad House, followed by delegation-level talks.
