Tel Aviv, Israel - With the West Asia conflict expanding, Israel's focus has shifted to fighting Hezbollah and Iran. Brig. Gen. (Res) Yossi Kuperwasser, a senior researcher at the Jerusalem Center for Security and Foreign Affairs, believes that ceasefire talks in Gaza are now on hold and the 'two-State solution' is unlikely to happen soon.
Kuperwasser, who was the former head of the research division in IDF Military Intelligence and Director General of the Israel Ministry of Strategic Affairs, emphasized the need to replace leadership in Gaza and Lebanon and to reduce Iran's influence in the region.
In a telephonic interview, Kuperwasser stated, "A realistic solution is that Hamas is removed from power in Gaza, and Lebanon regains control over its territory. Iran should focus on improving living conditions in Iran rather than building its hegemony in the Middle East."
He further mentioned that Israel plans to replace the Hamas leadership in Gaza and ensure the safety of its citizens along the northern border with Lebanon. "We wish to see the international community, led by the United States, take steps to reduce Iran's threat to Middle East stability," he added.
Hamas launched a massive terror attack against Israel on October 7 last year, killing over 1200 people and holding over 250 hostages. In response, Israel launched a counter-offensive targeting Hamas units in Gaza, resulting in over 35,000 Palestinian deaths, according to the Gaza health ministry.
Despite calls for a ceasefire and a two-state solution from major powers including the United States, Kuperwasser believes these talks are on hold until Israel deals with Hezbollah and Iran. He also stated that the two-state solution is unrealistic at this point due to the Palestinians' commitment to annihilating Israel.
