Israeli Ambassador Reuven Azar Shares Hanukkah's Significance in India
In New Delhi, Israeli Ambassador to India, Reuven Azar, extended Hanukkah greetings and explained the festival's significance. He shared a video on X, highlighting Hanukkah's history. The Israeli Embassy noted that this year, Hanukkah coincides with Christmas, inviting people to learn about the Jewish history of resilience and acceptance.
Azar engaged with people in Delhi, asking if they knew about Hanukkah. Many were aware it was a Jewish festival but unfamiliar with its details. Azar explained that Hanukkah celebrates the victory of light over darkness, dating back over 2,300 years when the Seljuks tried to erase the Jewish faith. The Maccabees, a small family in Israel, helped preserve their identity by re-inaugurating their temple in Jerusalem.
During Hanukkah, the menorah is lit as a symbol of respect for other faiths. Azar emphasized the universal message of respect and identity. India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, also extended Hanukkah greetings to Israeli Foreign Minister Gidon Sa'ar and the global community. Sa'ar thanked Jaishankar for his warm wishes.
