Israel has countered media reports accusing it of using water as a tool of "genocide" against Palestinians in Gaza. The Unit for the Coordination of Government Activities in the Territories (COGAT) provided details of its efforts to ensure water access in Gaza, including collaboration with UNICEF. COGAT shared on X that Israel coordinated repairs to the electricity line powering a desalination plant in Khan Yunis, which can produce 20,000 cubic meters of water daily.
These statements came after Human Rights Watch accused Israel of obstructing water access in Gaza since October 2023. COGAT labeled these claims as "libellous" and "egregious lies," stating that Israel supplies more water than international standards require for conflict zones. COGAT also highlighted its role in repairing water infrastructure damaged by Hamas and facilitating humanitarian aid.
COGAT, reporting to Israel's Minister of Defence, coordinates with the Palestinian Authority and international organizations to improve living standards in the region.
