On December 23, Israel and Slovakia entered into a significant agreement valued at 2 billion shekels (USD 582 million) to enhance Slovakia's air defense capabilities. This marks the largest defense export deal between the two nations.
The centerpiece of this deal is the BARAK MX air defense system, developed by Israeli Aerospace Industries. This advanced system is designed to protect against various aerial threats, including missiles and aircraft. It features three types of interceptor rockets with ranges from 35 to 150 kilometers, capable of countering fighter jets, helicopters, UAVs, cruise missiles, and tactical ballistic missiles.
Defense Ministry Director General Maj. Gen. (res.) Eyal Zamir highlighted the importance of defense exports, stating, "Defense exports are a central component of our security and economic resilience. They allow us to continue developing the next generations of the most advanced combat systems in the world."
In November, Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) reported a record-breaking order backlog of approximately USD 25 billion, with a 74% increase in net income for the third quarter of 2024. The growth was driven by the Missile and Space Systems Division, which saw sales rise to USD 1.87 billion in the first nine months of 2024, up from USD 1.63 billion in 2023. The Arrow missile system has also gained international recognition, supported by increased R&D investment.
International interest in Israel's military technology has surged, particularly as European countries boost their defense budgets in response to the conflict in Ukraine. Israel's development of a multilayered aerial defense system has attracted global attention.
