INS Talwar and Kenyan Navy Ship Shujaa Team Up for Maritime Exercise in Mombasa

Mombasa, Kenya – Indian Naval Ship Talwar and Kenyan Navy Ship Shujaa recently conducted a Maritime Partnership Exercise at sea. This exercise followed INS Talwar’s port visit to Mombasa.

Strengthening Ties

According to a post by the Indian Navy spokesperson, the exercise included Joint Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) Surveillance off the Kenyan coast. The visit and exercises aimed to enhance interoperability between the two navies and promote maritime security in the region.

Professional Interactions

During the port visit from September 22 to 25, 2024, personnel from both navies engaged in various professional interactions and cross-exchange visits. The Commanding Officer of INS Talwar met with Brigadier JS Kiswaa, the Deputy Commander of Kenya’s Navy, at Mtongwe Naval Base to discuss ongoing professional interactions and training support.

Professional exchanges included Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) and Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Defence (NBCD) demonstrations. Additionally, personnel from both navies participated in Yoga and sports activities, and the crew of INS Talwar visited an orphanage as part of an outreach program.

Joint Exercises

The command team of Kenya Navy Ship Shujaa visited INS Talwar to finalize the exercise program for the EEZ Surveillance and Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX). Upon departure, both ships demonstrated a high level of professional competence during the joint exercises.

The Ministry of Defence highlighted that these interactions underline the collaborative efforts of both nations towards achieving the goals outlined in the Joint Vision Statement ‘BAHARI’ released in December 2023.
