INS Shivalik, an Indian multi-role stealth frigate, has reached Pearl Harbor in Hawaii to take part in the 29th edition of the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise, the world’s largest naval exercise. The ship sailed into Pearl Harbor after completing JIMEX 24, a bilateral exercise between India and Japan.

Harbour Phase Activities

The harbour phase of the exercise, from June 27 to July 7, will include professional interactions, cross-deck visits, workshops, and team-building sessions. Participants will engage in multiple symposiums, exercise planning discussions, sports competitions, and reciprocal deck visits.

Sea Phase Activities

The sea phase of RIMPAC-24 is divided into three sub-phases, where ships will undertake basic and advanced level integration exercises. The event will conclude with a theatre-level large-force tactical exercise, featuring an Aircraft Carrier Battle Group, submarines, maritime reconnaissance aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, remotely piloted surface ships, and amphibious force landing operations, including joint operations with special forces of multinational navies.

Significance of RIMPAC-24

RIMPAC-24, spanning over six weeks of intense operations and training, aims to enhance interoperability and build trust among the navies of friendly foreign countries. Led by the US Navy, approximately 29 countries are participating in this multi-dimensional exercise. RIMPAC-24 provides a unique training opportunity while fostering and sustaining cooperative relationships among participants, critical to ensuring the safety of sea lanes and the security of the world’s oceans.

INS Shivalik’s Role

INS Shivalik’s participation in RIMPAC-24, 9000 nautical miles away from the Indian coast, stands as a testament to the Indian Navy’s capability to operate in any part of the world. INS Shivalik is an indigenously designed and built 6000-tonne guided missile stealth frigate.
