India’s S Jaishankar Talks About Border Tensions with China
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke in Washington, DC about the ongoing tensions between India and China. He explained that the tensions will continue as long as both countries have forward deployments of their militaries at the border. He noted that China violated agreements in 2020, leading to the current situation.
Jaishankar made these remarks at an event hosted by Carnegie Endowment in the US. He mentioned that the relationship between India and China has not been good for the last four years due to these tensions.
He also discussed China’s significant role in global manufacturing, accounting for about 31-32% of it. He pointed out that international businesses, mainly Western-led, have collaborated with China for mutual benefit over the past few decades. This makes trade with China almost unavoidable for any country involved in manufacturing or consumption.
Jaishankar emphasized the importance of being cautious about data security and the need to balance and mitigate risks in a data-sensitive and technology-sensitive world.
In August, India and China held the 31st meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs in Beijing. Both sides agreed to uphold peace and tranquility at the border and to intensify contact through diplomatic and military channels to resolve outstanding issues.
The Ministry of External Affairs stated that restoring peace and respect for the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is essential for normalizing bilateral relations.
