India’s Concerns on Middle East Conflict: S Jaishankar Speaks in the US

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed India’s concerns about the Middle East conflict during a talk at the Carnegie Endowment in the US. He condemned Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7 as a terrorist act and acknowledged Israel’s need to respond. However, he stressed that any response must adhere to international humanitarian law to avoid harm to civilians.

Jaishankar also mentioned the importance of international humanitarian efforts in Gaza and the need for communication to manage the conflict. He expressed worries about the conflict spreading to other regions, including Lebanon and the Red Sea, and emphasized India’s role in facilitating communication during difficult times.

India has consistently supported a two-state solution to the Israel-Palestine conflict. Prime Minister Narendra Modi was among the first global leaders to condemn the October 7 attack by Hamas. The situation has worsened with Iran launching missiles at Israel, targeting millions of civilians. Major countries are calling for a ceasefire and a two-state solution to achieve lasting peace.
