India and Russia Strengthen Military Ties in New Delhi
The 22nd meeting of the India-Russia Working Group on Military Technical Cooperation and Defence Industry took place in New Delhi. This important meeting was co-chaired by Sanjeev Kumar, Secretary of Defence Production from India's Ministry of Defence, and A Boytsov, First Deputy Director of Russia's Federal Service for Military Technical Cooperation.
The Ministry of Defence shared the news on social media, highlighting the ongoing collaboration between the two nations. The meeting is part of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Military & Military Technical Cooperation (IRIGC-M&MTC), which oversees various military and technical issues.
Long-standing Partnership
India and Russia have a strong strategic partnership in defence, guided by the Agreement on the Programme for Military-Technical Cooperation for 2021-2031. This agreement was signed during the inaugural India-Russia 2+2 Dialogue in December 2021.
The IRIGC-MTC, established in 2000, is the main body managing military cooperation between the two countries. It includes two Working Groups and nine Sub-Groups that discuss a wide range of military issues.
Joint Ventures and Initiatives
Over the years, the partnership has evolved from a buyer-seller relationship to joint research and production. Notable projects include the Brahmos cruise missile and the production of AK-203 rifles in India through the Indo-Russia Rifles Private Limited joint venture, supporting the "Make in India" initiative.
