An aircraft from the US Air Force carrying Indian citizens, who allegedly migrated illegally to the United States, landed in Amritsar, Punjab. A US Embassy spokesperson highlighted the country's strict enforcement of border and immigration laws, emphasizing that illegal migration is risky and not worthwhile.
On January 24, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India expressed its commitment to facilitating the return of Indian nationals overstaying or residing without proper documentation in the US or elsewhere. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India opposes illegal immigration due to its links to organized crime and assured that Indian nationals would be taken back if their nationality is verified.
The deportation has sparked political controversy, with Congress MP Manickam Tagore criticizing the US for allegedly treating Indian citizens inhumanely during deportation. He questioned the silence of Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Dr. S Jaishankar, on the matter.
Meanwhile, CBS News reported that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement is releasing some detainees due to overcrowding, with detention facilities operating at 109% capacity.
