In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Indian Ambassador Anil Kumar Rai expressed optimism about Ethiopia's economic future. He believes that Ethiopia's comprehensive economic programme could position the country as a leading player in Africa due to its large population, vast landmass, and robust infrastructure.
During an interview, Rai highlighted the strengthening relations between India and Ethiopia, particularly within the BRICS framework. BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, offers numerous opportunities for cooperation in sectors like industry, mining, agriculture, textiles, and services through modern digital technologies.
Rai emphasized the importance of BRICS in facilitating economic transformation and providing unique financial instruments beneficial to developing countries. He also mentioned a recent memorandum of understanding between India and Ethiopia on digital public infrastructure.
Education and human capital development are crucial for Ethiopia's growth, according to Rai. Diplomatic relations between India and Ethiopia date back to 1948, and Ethiopia joined BRICS on January 1, 2024, alongside Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
