ICC Seeks Arrest of Myanmar's Min Aung Hlaing for Rohingya Crisis
The International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor, Karim Khan, has announced his intention to seek an arrest warrant for Myanmar's military leader, Min Aung Hlaing. This is due to his alleged involvement in the 2017 crackdown on the Rohingya Muslim minority, which forced around 700,000 Rohingya to flee to Bangladesh amid reports of severe human rights abuses.
Khan stated that there are reasonable grounds to believe Min Aung Hlaing is responsible for crimes against humanity, including deportation and persecution of the Rohingya. Although Myanmar is not a party to the ICC, Bangladesh is, allowing the court to prosecute crimes that occurred across the border.
This move is part of a larger effort to address the Rohingya crisis, which is also being reviewed by the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Min Aung Hlaing, who took power in a 2021 coup, faces multiple accusations of crimes against humanity for his actions since the coup.
Richard Horsey from the International Crisis Group described the ICC's action as significant but doubted its immediate impact. Human rights groups, including Amnesty International, stress the importance of accountability, with Joe Freeman highlighting the need for senior leaders to be held accountable.
Khan indicated that more arrest warrants may follow, aiming to pursue justice against high-level Myanmar officials. Taw Nee from the Karen National Union emphasized the need for systemic reform, not just regime change.
