Hornbill Festival 2023: Nagaland Prepares for Silver Jubilee Celebration
The Department of Tourism in Nagaland is gearing up for the 25th Hornbill Festival, set to take place from December 1 to 10 at the Heritage Village, Kisama. Dr. G. Hukugha Sema, Commissioner and Secretary of Tourism, expressed excitement about this year’s grand event. A coordination meeting with tribal Hohos and organizations was held to discuss preparations. Dr. Sema emphasized the importance of tribal bodies, noting their role as the festival’s backbone. He acknowledged the success of the previous festivals and promised a remarkable 25th edition.
During the meeting, tribal representatives shared challenges such as water scarcity, electricity, network issues, and financial constraints. They highlighted that the Rs 1.5 lakhs provided by the state government was insufficient for the ten-day festival. Dr. Sema assured that the department would consider increasing funds for this special year. He also mentioned the possibility of extending the festival year-round from 2025, stressing the need for cooperation and maintenance.
Despite delays due to elections and extended monsoon rains, preparations are expected to be completed by November 15 or 20. New structures, including a gallery to accommodate more visitors, are being constructed to enhance the festival experience.
