Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Hardeep Puri, recently spoke about the potential inclusion of natural gas under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in India. While there is a growing agreement on this matter, no specific timeline has been provided. Puri highlighted that LPG gas connections are fully saturated, and LPG has been under GST since its inception, with commercial cylinders taxed at 18% and domestic at 5%.
During a press conference, Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary Pankaj Jain confirmed that LPG has always been under GST. The current price for Ujjwala gas in Delhi is Rs 503 per unit, while non-Ujjwala gas is Rs 803 per unit.
Puri also mentioned that aviation turbine fuel (ATF) might soon be included under GST, as several states like Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Andhra Pradesh are recognizing its benefits. However, the decision ultimately lies with the finance ministry and GST council.
Regarding biofuel, Puri announced that 20% ethanol blending with petrol will be achieved next month, with a goal of 30% by 2029-30. This initiative aims to reduce oil import costs, enhance energy security, and improve air quality. Currently, there are no plans to mandate ethanol blending with diesel, as it remains experimental.
Hardeep Puri is an Indian politician and a Union Minister. He is responsible for various government departments and policies.

Ethanol blending is the process of mixing ethanol, a type of alcohol made from plants, with petrol or diesel. This helps reduce pollution and reliance on oil imports.
LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It is commonly used in homes for cooking and heating. It is stored in cylinders and is a cleaner fuel compared to coal or wood.
Aviation turbine fuel is a special type of fuel used in airplanes. It is similar to kerosene and is important for air travel.
Oil import costs refer to the money India spends to buy oil from other countries. Reducing these costs can help save money and improve the country's economy.
