General Upendra Dwivedi Becomes New Indian Army Chief

On Sunday, General Upendra Dwivedi, an experienced infantry officer, took over as the 30th Chief of the Indian Army. He belongs to the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles and was previously the Vice Chief of Army Staff. General Dwivedi hails from Madhya Pradesh and studied at Sainik School Rewa. He joined the National Defence Academy in 1981 and was commissioned into the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles in 1984.

Throughout his career, General Dwivedi has served in various challenging terrains and operational environments, including the Kashmir Valley and the Rajasthan Desert. He has held significant positions such as Inspector General of Assam Rifles and Sector Commander. He has also commanded the Rising Star Corps and the Northern Army, providing strategic guidance and operational oversight.

General Dwivedi has been instrumental in modernizing the Indian Army, focusing on the induction of indigenous equipment and enhancing technological capabilities. He has also worked towards nation-building and infrastructure development in Jammu, Kashmir, and Ladakh.

In addition to his military achievements, General Dwivedi holds an M.Phil. in Defence and Management Studies and two Master’s degrees in Strategic Studies and Military Science. He has also authored articles in various professional forums and journals.

General Dwivedi is married to Sunita Dwivedi, a science graduate and homemaker. Sunita is associated with Aarushi, an institute for special ability children in Bhopal. The couple has two daughters who work with NGOs.
