In New Delhi, former Indian diplomat KP Fabian expressed concerns about the recent developments in the case of Hardeep Singh Nijjar's murder. Nijjar, labeled a terrorist by India's National Investigation Agency, was killed in June 2023. Four men, Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, were charged with his murder and conspiracy but are no longer in custody, as per documents from the Justice Department of British Columbia, Canada.
Fabian questioned whether the release of the accused is a setback for the Canadian government, noting the lengthy investigation by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP). The accused were arrested in May 2024, with Brar, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh detained in Edmonton, and Amandeep Singh already in custody for unrelated charges in Ontario.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team in British Columbia charged them with murder and conspiracy, but no evidence linked them to India, despite media speculation. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that Canada provided no specific evidence or formal communication regarding the arrests.
Relations between India and Canada have been tense since Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of Nijjar's murder, claims India has dismissed as "absurd" and "motivated."
