In a recent press briefing, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri addressed the ongoing deportation process of Indian nationals from the United States. He emphasized that deportations are not a new phenomenon and highlighted India's cooperation in ensuring that returnees are indeed Indian citizens. Misri stated, "The process of deportation is not new. It is something that the External Affairs Minister also emphasized in the Parliament yesterday."
Misri clarified that India is not an uncooperative country and that legal and security issues are considered in the deportation process. He mentioned that there are currently 487 presumed Indian citizens with final removal orders in the US, and details have been provided for 298 individuals.
Regarding the use of a military plane for deportations, Misri noted that the recent flight was different from previous ones. He also addressed concerns about protests following deportations, stating, "I don't think there was any protest. We don't have any record of any protest having been made about it."
Misri assured that the Ministry of External Affairs is addressing any mistreatment of deported citizens with the US government. He reiterated the importance of preventing mistreatment and taking action against illegal immigration.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also commented on the issue, noting that deportations by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) have been in practice since 2012. He assured that the needs of deportees, including food and medical emergencies, are attended to during transit.
