On Sunday, Thailand joyfully welcomed back five Thai nationals who were recently freed from captivity by Hamas. They arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Thailand, having traveled from Israel. The welcoming party included Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa, Deputy Foreign Minister Russ Jalichandra, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs shared on social media that the Minister expressed happiness over the safe return of the five individuals. He emphasized the government's ongoing efforts to secure the release of one remaining Thai hostage and to bring back the remains of two Thai nationals. The Minister thanked all parties involved and reaffirmed the commitment to assist all Thai citizens working abroad.
The freed workers are identified as Sathien Suwannakham from Nong Bua Lam Phu, Pongsak Thaenna from Buri Ram, Watchara Sriaoun from Udon Thani, Surasak Rumnao from Udon Thani, and Bannawat Saethao from Nan.
Before the conflict between Hamas and Israel began on October 7, 2023, there were about 35,000 Thai workers in Israel. This year, Thailand plans to send 10,000 workers to Israel's agricultural sector and another 8,000 to the construction sector.
